Four years ago, a small group of people had an idea. They recognised a need in this area for specialised transport to assist groups and individuals with mobility/transport problems. Initially the thought was “this is going to take a long time, if ever to come to fruition" However, after only a short time, funds were secured, a vehicle was ordered, an office base secured and the volunteer recruitment process began.
Christine Dales came on board as Project Co-ordinator and the Goole and District Community Transport Group proudly launched the Goole Gofar on the 5th of January 2004.
A small (but perfectly formed) group of volunteers became interested in ongoing fundraising activities which included, table top sales, Country and Western evenings, stalls at Old Goole gala, sponsored swimming and ...leg waxing! The first group to raise funds for the Gofar was the Cornerstones, who became regular users of the bus from the early stages. Other examples of how the local community have supported the Gofar include: The Supported Learning Group based at Goole College produced a 3D calendar, all proceeds of which were donated to the Gofar.
To date the Gofar has travelled far and wide: taking athletes to an international competition in Birmingham; assisting a Youth Charter Video Club to travel to various destinations to make a video; acted as a shuttle service for a local drama group of which their final destination was Poland; taking the Local Access Group on various day trips and allowing members who have trouble accessing regular transport, to go on day trips to the likes of Goathland, Bakewell, York, Barnsley, Ripon and Brigg to name but a few!
To date their are over 70 groups or individuals using the Goole Gofar
